FORGOTTEN
VOICES: WOMEN IN BOSNIA
USA/Bosnia-Herzegovina, documentary, 2008; 52 min
In English, and Bosnian with English subtitles
Director/Writer/Producer: Jennifer Rawlings
Production Company: Squeaky Tula
Synopsis
In 2006 filmmaker Jennifer Rawlings journeyed
to Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina, to interview women who survived
the Bosnian War of the 1990s. These stories go beyond the headlines
to uncover the
everyday ordeal of war time from the perspective of women
isolated in their bombed homes without water, electricity, food or help
from their
absentee men turned warriors. Through seemingly simple
tales of survival in urban warfare the women reveal their tremendous
capacity to survive
and re-build their lives. From young girls who grew up
under the constant shelling to mothers gripped by loss of their children,
the film pays homage
to ordinary women and their ingenuity in maintaining the
semblance of a normal family life in war time chaos.
