Synopsis
Before the 1990s war, Serbo-Croatian
was the official language of Yugoslavia and was
taught in schools in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Today,
the Bosnian constitution does not
recognize an official language for the country.
Diagnosis S.B.H. explores whether Bosnians can
really claim an identity distinct
from Serbs and Croats by asking the seemingly simple
questions: What
language is the Bosnian language? Do Croatian, Bosnian, and Serbian
really differ? While the film ultimately leaves these questions
unanswered, it captures the ambivalent position Bosnians find
themselves in, desiring a language to call their own while resisting
what is perceived as a politically motivated move to divide the
three constituent peoples of Bosnia. Diagnosis S.B.H. is particularly
concerned with how these questions of linguistic identity affect
Bosnian youth. The film features interviews with young Bosnian
musicians who perform in English. Without passing judgment, the
film explores the ambivalent position of Bosnian youth participating
in a popular culture saturated by foreign influences, without
a clear sense of their own linguistic identity.
