Synopsis
Lazar (Nikola Kojo) wakes up in hospital after a two-month coma suffering from total amnesia. He slowly starts to piece together his past, trying to discover who he was and how he came to be shot in the head at point blank range. Through flashbacks and encounters with politicians, military officers, businessmen, and mafiosos, Lazar discovers his violent past. Director Dejan Zec˙evic´ interweaves Lazar’s personal story with Serbian national history, so that Lazar’s quest for self-knowledge illuminates Serbia’s darkest days in the Balkan wars. The actions of victims and perpetrators, individuals and government authorities are explored with a frankness that elevates the film’s slick thriller conventions to the realm of the political. With an accomplished cast, expert direction and a supremely suspenseful story, The Fourth Man demonstrates once again that in addition to art cinema the Balkans can also produce outstanding genre films.
