Synopsis:
Gvozden Rosic, chief of a small orchestra in Guca, a small
rural village in the heart of Serbia, trains for the largest
brass competition in Europe. Used to launch attacks during
wartime, the trumpet has since lost its military
significance to become an emotional component in the lives
of the Serbian people; it is played when children are born,
when people move to a new house, and also escorts the
deceased on their final journey. In recent years, Serbia has
been trying to recover from the spiral of violence of the
1990s, the long international embargo, NATO’s bombing and
the ensuing economic depression. Guca and the trumpet
symbolize Serbia’s reaction to this latest set of
adversities, and all others this country has faced
throughout history.
