Synopsis
A snapshot of the cold war era in Europe, and focused on the
propaganda war between the Ceausescu regime and Radio Free
Europe's Romanian program, the film explores all facets of
political propaganda, from the creative to the most lethal.
Solomon's extraordinary film peels the layers of truth, lies
and shades of grey in-between through top-notch archival
material, riveting interviews with witnesses from both sides
of the fence and delivers a masterful cinematic work on
political propaganda.
Director’s statement
This is the unique story of a love and hate triangle built
around something one cannot see, touch or weigh: radio
waves. Our film uncovers this unknown and peculiar episode
of the final stage of the Cold War, from 1977 until
Ceausescu’s downfall in 1989. It strangely predicts our era,
that blends extremisms of all colours.
Director Alexandru Solomon
Alexandru’s recent work triggered public debates about the
function of documentary film within the public sphere and
contributed to re-establishing documentary film as an arena
for reframing Romania's recent history. Solomon's previous
work, The Great Communist Bank Robbery (2004), broadcast as
part of BBC4's prestigious Storyville series, was awarded
Best Film at the History Film Festival in Pessac, France,
the Prize for Social Values at Documenta Madrid and the
Grand Prix in Mediawave, Hungary. Cold Waves is his sixth
film.
